Michael Bourgoise is a licensed clinical social worker, addiction counselor, trauma specialist, and published researcher in long-term recovery. He earned his Master of Social Work (MSW) in Mental Health and Chemical Dependency from Eastern Michigan University in 2020 and a post-graduate certificate in drug and alcohol studies from Wayne State University in 2021.
Before joining OPEN, Mike conducted clinical trials in addiction research at Michigan Medicine and worked as an outpatient psychotherapist for the federal justice system, as well as a treatment provider for adolescents with substance use disorders. He also currently works as an Emergency Department social worker at Corewell Health System.
His clinical interests include harm reduction, equitable access to opioid use disorder medications, and integrating evidence-based interventions for substance use and mental health challenges. Mike is trained in EMDR, DBT, and CBT, and utilizes Internal Family Systems and Polyvagal Theory in his clinical practice. Moreover, he adopts a humanistic, holistic approach that balances evidence-based methods with emotional sensitivity.
