Patients with opioid use disorder commonly experience episodes of acute pain related to injury, illness, or surgery. As more patients present with acute pain and co-occurring opioid use disorders, providers should be aware of general principles and strategies for managing these conditions and coordinating care with a specialist.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe challenges of managing pain in patients with opioid use disorder (OUD)
  • Understand strategies for managing pain in patients with OUD using case examples
  • Review considerations for initiation or continuation of MOUD in patients with OUD
