Educational Objectives:
After completing this activity, participants will be able to understand that opioid use disorder is a medical illness and identify differences between dependence and addiction; identify the differences between medications for opioid use disorder and implement strategies to treat the disorder; describe and address the indications, dosing algorithms, potential complications, and components of successful buprenorphine administration and referral system in the emergency department; understand how to manage acute pain for patients with opioid use disorder; understand and implement harm reduction strategies from the emergency department, including rationale and evidence for community naloxone distribution; and describe, utilize and act according to the legal and regulatory consideration related to buprenorphine prescribing.
