Association Between Cost Sharing and Naloxone Prescription Dispensing

  • On average, out-of-pocket medication costs are greater at the beginning of a new year when insurance deductibles reset.
  • The mean out-of-pocket cost of naloxone for both commercially insured and Medicare patients was greater after January 1, 2021. The probability of patients who did not pick up and abandoned their naloxone prescription was greater after January 1, 2021, when compared with 60 days prior to the new year.
  • Thus, lower out-of-pocket costs were associated with greater dispensing of naloxone to commercially insured and Medicare patients.
