Dr. Chad Brummett Warns Against Prescribing Opioids for Wisdom Tooth Extractions in Interview with CBS

Sep 12, 2019

Dr. Chad Brummett spoke with CBS News about the dangers of prescribing opioids for wisdom tooth extractions and discussed potential alternatives. Michigan OPEN’s research has found that just filling a prescription for opioids after a wisdom tooth extraction, which is often patients’ first exposure to opioids, more than doubles the risk of continued use in patients who have never used opioids before.

A combination of acetaminophen and ibuprofen has been found to be more effective in managing pain, and Dr. Brummett advises dentists to use caution before prescribing opioids for these surgeries.

The interview aired on CBS This Morning on August 21 and can be viewed here.
