Buprenorphine Dispensing after Elimination of the Waiver Requirement

• In response to the elimination of the waiver requirement for prescribing buprenorphine in January 2023, the number of prescribers increased from 990 at the end of 2022 to 2,887 prescribers in the beginning of 2023 and continued to rise at the rate of 595 prescribers per month in 2023.
• The elimination of the waiver requirement did not have a significant impact on the number of patients to whom buprenorphine was dispensed.
• The number of patients who initiated buprenorphine therapy increased modestly. However, there was no significant change in the rate of new patients per month thereafter.
