Michigan OPEN in collaboration with MSQC develops opioid prescribing recommendations

Oct 6, 2017

The Michigan Opioid Prescribing Engagement Network (Michigan-OPEN) teamed up with the Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative (MSQC) to develop a new evidence-based guide to assist providers in prescribing opioids after surgery.

The guide, now available online for free, gives postoperative prescribing recommendations for 11 common procedures including: hysterectomies, laparoscopic appendectomies, and more. But, the groups are not stopping there. In fact, with additional research on patient behavior and pain control and surgical quality research, the team plans to include additional medications and procedures to this easy-to-use list.

The Michigan-OPEN team has several ongoing projects and have created additional resources such as a brochure about postop opioid medication use that surgical teams can use to educate their patients, as well as an interactive map for Michigan residents to find nearby prescription drop-off locations where they can safely dispose of leftover medications.
