After a successful year as the brand-new OPEN in 2024, our team knew that 2025 would yield even greater success. In 2025, OPEN published 16 brand new educational resources, including the Neurobiology of Addiction video, Safer Injection Pocket Guide, and the SUD Treatment Access Card. Along with this success, the OPEN Warmline was launched and new initiatives were added.
OPEN’s 2025 impact reports, highlighting individual initiative achievements and impact across all projects, are officially published.
In our Pain Management initiative, a Myth vs Fact Substance Use Disorder (SUD) in Pregnancy campaign garnered over 445,000 impressions across all of our social media accounts, reaching residents throughout Michigan. OPEN updated both the Opioid Prescribing Recommendations initiative and Surgery Pain Management initiative to include the most relevant and helpful information to our community. Over the year, OPEN held over 140 interviews to understand best practices and improve overall care for patients with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD).
Looking at the Prevention initiative, over 12,200+ Safe Storage and Disposal products were distributed to Michigan residents across 22 different counties. The Safe Storage + Disposal initiative website was explored over 16,000 times, and more than 3.8 million people across the country saw our prevention-based media campaigns.
OPEN’s Harm Reduction initiative found great success during 2025. Over 14,000 naloxone kits were distributed across 51 Michigan counties, including 1,800+ through Michigan emergency departments, 8,675+ through one of OPEN’s naloxone vending machines, and 3,750+ through naloxone community training. One community member who was surveyed after using a naloxone vending machine said “Without [naloxone] one of my longtime friends would be dead. The Narcan from this vending machine saved his life.”
The Substance Use Disorder initiative introduced 4 new educational sites to engage with: Risky Substance Use and Surgery, SUD Treatment Access, Substance Use Disorder in Primary Care, and Substance Use Disorder in Pregnancy. The OPEN Warmline, a new service that provides Michigan residents with same-day buprenorphine prescriptions and support for managing OUD, launched in September 2025. Between the launch and December, the Warmline conducted over 185 patient phone visits and provided 95 buprenorphine prescriptions.
For the Youth Engagement initiative, it had an impact all across Michigan. Painless: The Opioid Musical traveled to the Upper Peninsula for the first time. One high school student who saw Painless was quoted in saying afterwards, “The biggest lesson is that addiction doesn’t have to start as bad choices … and it can take over anyone’s life.” Painless’s new Instagram account gained over 1,000 impressions after beginning to post full time in September 2025.
As OPEN pushes forward into 2026, we’re excited to bring more education, resources, and engagement to people across Michigan and beyond. In the meantime, make sure to subscribe to the OPEN newsletter to stay up to date on our offerings and upcoming events.
